Why Clean Beauty Is Important To Me
For me, a clean beauty routine means less inflammation, clearer skin, and a brighter complexion. Learn about the products that have helped me and my go-to products for clean beauty.
Clean beauty means a product that is made without a long (and ever-evolving) list of ingredients linked to harmful health effects. These can range from hormone disruption and cancer to plain-old skin irritation. Some of the most notorious offenders are parabens, phthalates, PEGs, ethanolamines, chemical sunscreens, synthetic fragrance, BHT, and BHA.
Now here’s the twist: a lot of brands do what’s called green washing to make products more appealing. Green washing is where you present your brand as eco-friendly, clean, and sustainable without any facts to back those claims up. Words like ‘natural’, ‘clean’, ‘green’ and ‘hypoallergenic’ don’t have a defined standard that’s being regulated. This is why it’s important to go to reputable source to find your clean beauty products and why I trust Follain to bring me the best of the best in beauty and skincare.
Everything that’s carried by Follain has met a series of strict standards. This includes a safety review and ensuring that every product is free from ingredients on their restricted list. Their website explains: “Ingredients can be harmful for different reasons. Some may dry out skin while others have been linked to cancer. Often, these ingredients are put into products to make them more pleasing — whether to smell a certain way, create a richer lather or give them a longer shelf life. But our bodies don’t know how to process them.”
For me, having a skincare and makeup routine free of irritants is essential. I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome – a chronic illness that causes a lot of different hurdles, but most predominantly… HIVES! Because of MCAS, I get hives constantly – and with too many inflammatories, I can go into anaphylaxis. Everyone with MCAS has different triggers (weather, stress, fragrances, etc.) that range in intensity. For me, I am guaranteed hives with synthetic fragrances. So having a skincare routine that’s free from this is a must-have.
I’m especially loving Follain’s new line of in-house products. I gave their Daily Essentials kit a try. It’s a great way in to clean beauty if you’re looking for an intro. Their cleanser and moisturizer are two pieces I’m excited to keep in my daily rotation. Both are gentle enough that I have zero irritation but are still hard working formulas. I definitely noticed more hydrated skin after using this line for a week.
My favorite thing about this line is its emphasis on hydration. Just because you’re using clean beauty, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice targeting specific skin needs. Some other favorites of mine are Tata Harper’s clarifying cleanser and floral essence and Indie Lee’s Brightening Cleanser. I have a lot of products in my arsenal, and I’ve liked my absolute favorites below.
