Small Brands I’m Loving
This year, I've been working hard to focus my purchases around supporting small makers, indie designers and unique small brands around the globe. Slowly but surely, I've been able to curate a small but mighty list of the places that fit the bill. From my new go-to shops to places that have plenty of pieces at the tippy top of my wishlist, here are the small brands I'm loving:
Shop My Look
McMullen: I have to show extreme self restraint in browsing the McMullen site. It is the perfect curation of chic and wearable. The turtleneck I’m wearing in these pictures is from McMullen, andIt was made by Aisling Camps, one of the many Black partners McMullen features. Aisling Camps backstory is so cool. She first worked as a mechanical engineer focusing on sustainability. The Trinidad native started her own namesake brand after graduating from FIT and specializes in superior-quality knitwear.
Rennes: GOOD GRIEF, I could spend hours (and my whole bank account) at Rennes. The shop is brimming with indie designers, unique finds, and every piece has a story. The dress I’m wearing above is by Cawley Studios – a brand Rennes features. Cawley Studios is made of a mother-daughter pair that hand smock every piece in their London studio. SWOON.
Egg Trading: Even saying the name “Egg Trading” makes me feel chic. Classic, timeless, pieces with a little bit of quirk is what you’ll find at Egg. I have a few pieces from egg (like this dress and this dress!) and the quality is unmatched. Egg carries both their own in-house brand and a collection of other designers that fit the Egg look – streamlined, whimsical, and full of movement.
Vada: 9 times out of 10, if you see me out in public (or in the above picture!), I’m wearing one of my pairs of Vada hoops. Classic and simple or bold and quirky: Vada has the best jewelry selection for whatever you’re searching for. I’m biased as it’s an Austin-based brand, but all the same, the Vada pieces I own have been staples of mine for years.
Fewer Finer: My latest obsession is tuning into the Fewer Finer vintage charm drop every Friday. This brand is like a candy store: vintage pieces, new works, and custom engraving can all be found under one roof (or website, rather). I’ve scooped a few charms and a charm collector necklace from Madison, the owner. Keep an eye on her Instagram for all of her latest finds!
Nakard: Y’all know how obsessed I am with Nak Armstrong’s jewelry. He designed my engagement ring! So sign me up for his newer line, Nakard. Nakard features more budget-friendly jewelry picks (still a bit of a splurge, but not engagement-ring priced!)
Follain: Another fav that’s not-so-secret! I used to visit Follain when it was its own stand-alone tiny shop in Boston’s South End. Even then, it felt like stepping into Sandra Bullock’s soap shop from Practical Magic (a dream!!) Needless to say, I’m still shopping Follain’s exquisite selection from afar in Austin. Their selection of clean beauty is unmatched and their own, new, in-house brand is worth a look, too!
Love Seen: Did I buy these eyelashes after binging Stylish with Jenna Lyons on HBO? Yes. Am I glad I did? Absolutely. I’m not a make-up artist by any means. My way of leveling up a make-up look is to add lashes. So naturally, these were a sound purchase to add to my make-up kit. Love Seen’s selection makes you feel as though you’re truly getting a custom experience. To weight, size, and even color, you can pick the lash that’s exactly right for you.
Violette FR: If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen me rave about this new brand in stories and on reels. But c’mon! This red lip is UNMATCHED. I can’t explain how it looks good on every single skin tone, and it stays firmly in place in real life. Bonus: the website lets you try on the lipstick (and other products) virtually so you don’t have to take my word for the perfect match.
