A Dress With Roots

When I decided I wanted to build a site to help people find the next thing they're going to absolutely love, I knew I wanted to spotlight brands that have a mission I support. See why I'm obsessed with this line of dresses straight from Columbia.

When I decided I wanted to build a site to help people find the next thing they’re going to absolutely love, I knew I wanted to spotlight brands that have a mission I support. This means I’m dedicated to focusing on small fashion brands, designers that give back, traditional artisans, BIPOC owned brands and women owned businesses. Agua by Agua Bendita is a small designer that I’m happy to celebrate! Here’s why:

“Our mission is to empower and celebrate women."

Catalina Álvarez and Mariana Hinestroza founded Agua by Agua Bendita whilst studying fashion at Colegiatura Colombiana University. They were inspired by the scraps of brightly colored fabrics that were being discarded at Catalina’s father’s clothing factory. They began the line by fashioning together swimsuits from this discarded fabric. The suits caught on, and soon they found themselves asking large textile manufactures in Medellín and Bogotá to send over their unused fabrics and fabric samples.

To this day, the focus of Agua by Agua Bendita is to bring their Columbian culture to the forefront of every piece. The dresses are inspired by Columbian embroidery traditions and the women artisans that keep this tradition alive.

Giving back to their community in Columbia is also a priority of the brand. Álvarez and Hinestroza have created a program called 700 Hearts, which employs single mothers to be the artisans behind each piece of clothing. The founders have said that Columbian women are the heart and soul of their company, so it is necessary to aim to improve the life of every woman they employ. Over 700 of these local Columbian women work to stitch together each piece in the Agua Bendita collection by using traditional Columbian embroidery. The 700 Hearts are meticulous at their job and ensure that those who wear Agua Bendita pieces have a treasured piece they’ll cherish.
